When traveling with an infant as opposed to traveling alone you could easily double your time and effort exerted to prepare for the trip. Restrictions implemented by Homeland security can be almost as challenging as flying with your little one.
In order to be prepared for these changes, it is best to start the preparation process before leaving your house. In the even that you are not departing from home, but from a hotel room, or friend or relatives house, extra considerations need to be made before leaving.
If departing to a foreign city travel restrictions could be even more challenging. Preparations should be started several weeks in advance before leaving. Knowing how long you will stay will determine whether separate passports will be needed for you your infant or if it will be possible to include your infant's name on your passport.
If a foreign country is part of your travel plans then you also need to obtain visas for both you and your infant. Most certainly you will also need the birth certificate for your child. Depending on which country you are traveling to it will be necessary to have immunizations completed. These records should be with you as well. The discussion above applies to most foreign countries of travel. However, it is a good idea to check with your travel agent or research online if travel to countries such as Canada is less restrictive.
Therefore the first step of getting all the necessary travel documents together is done, you can now focus on your infant's special needs. These should be able to be addressed without much concern, since infant's are needy individuals, however their needs can be met at home or away from home. However, here are some special points to consider.
Most airlines will allow you to carry your car infant seat on the aircraft. If you are planning to do so then check to see what homeland security travel restrictions require for the portable car seat. For instance, it should be small enough to fit inside the X-ray scanning system at the security check-in at the airport. It should not have any sharp metal parts that can be dismantled from the car seat.
Special attention needs to be placed on medication as well, since security measures impose that only a certain amount of fluids may be in your possession. If you are not breast feeding, it might be wise to pack powdered formula in plastic baggies, and once cleared and the check-point purchase bottled water to use in the bottles. Liquid medications your infant might take need to be in clearly labeled containers and must not exceed the specified volumes.
Traveling should always be fun and rewarding. Being saddled with an infant particularly in todayas world does not have to mean that you give up the fun. The homeland security restrictions are there for a reason. It certainly adds to the time and preparation you have to make for travel. But in most cases this is no more than what you have already done because you are traveling with an infant. It ensures that your travel is safe and orderly. This is certainly the first step towards fun.
