You should know that right now you are not in the speaking business! Instead you are in the business of marking your speaking services. Your talent and message can only take you so far but when you learn to become a top-quality marketer, your professional speaking business will take off!
Early on in my professional speaking career, I would see many run of the mill speakers get public speaking jobs that even I couldn't obtain. I would see these speakers get job after job while I just sat there and scratched my head. My friend, John, who was a great speaker, unfortunately did not last too long in public speaking. The main reason was he was unable to make enough money to support his family by not getting enough bookings for public speaking. The one thing I know today is because I am a great marketer, not because I'm a great speaker is the reason I make a lot of money today. Here are some tips to help you do the same.
1) First thing to remember when you're starting a professional speaking business is fill your bank account instead of filling your ego. You need to have the mindset to go after jobs that will put money in your pocket instead of focusing on fame and stardom. Fame and stardom is inevitable in your motivational speaking career if you do enough seminars and speaking engagements, believe me.
2) You need to teach people how to give you money. The hosts and conference planners don't always know what you need or want. Their main goal is to put on an amazing conference or seminar and it's guaranteed that they aren't focused on putting money in your pocket. Because of that very reason you need to teach people how to give you money. Show the conference planner how they can give the book for free by including the price of it in the registration fee or you could pre-sell you book. Or you can pre-sell merchandise and offer back o the room merchandise. Don't ever be afraid to go after the big money.
3) Know that one idea can make all the difference. Wondering how to make money with professional speaking, know that one idea is all you really need to get started. By doing different things you will help generate the ideas you need and then be prepared to take action on them.
4) You should never stop learning. Learn multiple proven, contested formulas that will attract unlimited and continuous wealth so that you can live stress free and live exactly how you want to live each and every day. Instead of just working right, you need to work smart. Learn to use strategies that work instead of trying to work with get-rich-quick schemes that end up disastrously.
5) Market. Market. Market. If no one knows you, they can't give you a motivational speaking job. As simplistic as this concept sounds, I often find people who claim to never advertise or dip into vain self-promotion. I don't think self-promotion is vain. In fact, I think not marketing yourself is the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot.
